Defence studies,being one of the elective subjects at U.G level was first introduced in the year 2015.The subject mostly deals with the various issues concerning with National Security, Internal Security, External Security,Strategic Defence and various other pertaining issues having import and to maintain the Peace,Sovereignty and Integrity of our country.Being a multi-disciplinary subjects students after studying this programme will avail scope of employment not only in military or defence related manufacturing sector,it will widen up to go for various research works in the field of Strategic Defence,International relations and bilateral understanding between the nations.As per the UGC’S list it is one of modern and emerging objects of study not only at present,but also in future as well.

This Ramnagar College was founded on the 9th September in 1972 and its affiliation was granted by the University of Calcutta upto P.U. and B.A. standard for the first time. The College was granted extension of affiliation in B.Com (Pass) and B.Sc(Pass) by C.U in 1973 and 1980 respectively . H.S course in Arts Science and Commerce was introduction in 1977.
The Department started its journey in 1972 offering only B.A. pass course under the University of Calcutta, Vidyasagar University was established and our college came under it. The authority of Vidyasagar University granted affiliation in Philosophy Honours Course in 1991. Number of seats for Honours and General courses are 68 and 300 respectively.
It is located in the 1st floor of the S.J Building. Prof. Kalipada Santra joined in 02/01/1973 and Prof. Sanjib Kr. Mahapatra joined 01/09/1971. Presently, the Department has 2(Two) Full-time teachers ,Dr.Rasmita Satapathy (Associate Professor) and Prof Probir Naskar (Assistant Professor) and also their effort is adequately supplemented by 3(Three) Recognized SACT Teachers.
Students of the Department have performed consistently well for last 10 years. In the Honours Course a large number of Students securing very good percentage of marks passing from this College many students gone for higher education and many of them have serving in various important Govt. and Non-Govt. Sectors.
Teachers –Students contact in this department constantly inspire students to become perfect gentleman. In constant contact and conversation, the students are also fully conscious that the reputation of this college depends primarily on the standard of discipline they maintain in and outside the college.

Department of sociology had been started in the year 2001 at under graduate (UG) level as Pass subject for honours subjects i.e., Sanskrit, Political Science, Bengali, English and Philosophy. The honours for subjects in the department had been started in the year 2008 with eighteen enrolled students. In the year 2011, 1st batch of the students had been successfully passed out from the department. In the session, 2015-16, total student strength of the department in Honours level are 43 and in Pass level are 700. One permanent full time teacher for this Department had been appointed through College Service Commission in the year 2010. Now the department has one Assistant Professor and three state aided college teachers.
In this department, the students’ admission system is controlled centrally. All the faculty members of this department actively participate in this admission procedure. Through proper counseling and mentoring, the teachers admit the concerned students. Due to less availability of job prospects in the traditional sector, i.e., teaching profession, the students are not well aware regarding its job prospects. Here the departmental teachers motivate the students providing information on high job opportunity of this subject in other areas, i.e., sectors in NGOs, administrative services, health sectors etc.
Through proper scrutiny, the teachers make a list of eligible students for admission. In this department, the students may admit through direct admission system of the college.

The Department of Geography started with a general course in 2004, and the Hons. In the subject was introduced later in 2006. Since the inception, the Department has been catering to the need of the students and has been making considerable development in academic field through tireless efforts of all the staff. At present the department consists of one assistant professor (full time), five State Aided College Teacher and two Lab-attendants. The students are facilitated with audio-visual smart class regularly. The Library is enriched with subject-oriented books, reference books, national and international journals. The Department publishes the reflections of its students in the Departmental magazine and wall magazine annually. The Laboratory is equipped with sufficient instruments and practical-work is monitored by Departmental teachers and lab-attendants. Department organise regularly Certificate Course as well as Extension activities and most of the students are participated and getting benefited. Thus, Geography Department plays a vital role to the education and training of its students.

The Department of Mathematics at Ramnagar College fosters a vibrant and intellectually stimulating environment for the study and exploration of mathematical concepts. The Department started its journey in 1981 by offering Mathematics as a pass subject for B. Sc. General Course. In 1996, B. Sc Honours in Mathematics was first offered. Till now, the Department is offering the same in many formats (e.g under Three tier, under CBCS, under CCFUP etc.) time to time as prescribed by the affiliating university and other higher authorities.
Teaching and Instruction: The department offers Mathematics Honours degree at UG level. The department follows syllabus prescribed by the affiliating university. It caters a diverse range of courses, from introductory calculus and algebra to advanced topics in areas like ring theory, L.P.P, and differential equations.
Student-Centric Learning: The department incorporates active learning methodologies such as student seminars, peer teaching, and group discussions.
Research and Scholarship: Faculty members actively engage in research, contributing to the advancement of mathematical knowledge. The faculty members do researches in the areas of Ring theory, Graph theory, Fuzzy theory, Mathematical Modelling etc.

The Department of Nutrition was established in our college in the year 2005 affiliated by Vidyasagar University. At first the department was started by offering Nutrition subject as a general subject for B. Sc General in Bioscience. In the year 2007, the department got permission for offering B. Sc Honors course in Nutrition. This honors course commenced with 7 students but at present there are approximately 150 students studying in this department. Currently, there are four dedicated, efficient and diligent Sate Aided College Teacher in the Department. The Department has its own laboratory equipped with modern apparatus and instruments for precision testing both for curriculum prescribed by the affiliation university as well as high level research works.
The department has been successfully imparting the moral and social values in the students of the college. It also enhances reasoning ability and rational thinking of the students.
